Living with a disability is a challenge that a lot of people face nowadays. There are people who have special needs in order to live comfortably. Others need full-time assistance and support. NDIS is designed to help these individuals meet their needs and be able to live their lives to the fullest that they can. But what is NDIS and how to get NDIS ready?
This short post will discuss NDIS, your child’s eligibility, and how you can apply for NDIS.
What is the NDIS?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a funding scheme that helps differently abled people maintain their independence in doing daily tasks.
The NDIS was established in 2011 as a response to a Productivity Commission report. The report showed that the previous scheme was inflexible and inefficient. In the NDIS, eligible people can access different service providers who specialize in a specific service. The eligible people, called participants, are then assigned to a service provider after an assessment period.
For children, these can range from speech pathology therapy to occupational therapy for some cases. Many services providers offer interventions such as speech and development delay Brisbane wide. Many of them also assist with NDIS applications and NDIS packages. Check it out at Montrose
Is my child eligible?
Eligibility is determined if the person has the following:
- A permanent disability or developmental delay that hinders them from participating in daily activities
- Is 7 years of age or older
- Must be a citizen of Australia, permanent resident, or has a Protected Special Category visa
- And is currently residing in an area where NDIS operates
How do I apply?
As a parent of a child who meets these criteria, you can apply to get access to the funding. Many service providers help parents such as you get NDIS ready. If your application is approved, you will have a Planning Meeting with an NDIA representative. This meeting is where they discuss the terms or “plan” for your individualised funding. This can be done through the phone. If this is not possible due to the participant’s circumstances, special arrangements can be made beforehand.
The meeting lays out the personalized funding program that is designed with the participant’s condition in mind. The participant can then purchase their needed services such as occupational therapy Toowoomba service providers offer today. This empowers the participant to get the services that they really need without the restriction of getting from only a single source.
When the plan is finalised, the NDIS will then keep in touch to discuss how you can follow the plan. They will assist the participant through coordinators that can help you connect with relevant service providers that fit their needs.
